Parker Aerospace linear and rotary electromechanical actuators (EMAs) offer a safe and reliable means to control primary and secondary aircraft control surfaces, based on pilot or autopilot commands.

With over 25 years of electromechanical flight control actuation, Parker has a strong heritage in electromechanical actuation and motor control for aerospace applications. Our EMAs allow for electronic control conversion to mechanical displacement through using AC or DC motor controls. Our actuation is used to position the aircraft flight control surfaces, improving fuel efficiency, and reducing pilot workload. Our broad experience and EMA pedigree include both military and commercial applications.

Our EMA designs meet the most stringent safety regulations driven by the certification authorities (FAA and EASA) as well as military aircraft standards. In order to meet safety requirements, the EMAs can be designed with dual-redundant motors and dual-load paths (ball screw and safety rod) connecting an actuator to a flight control surface.

Our electromechanical actuators utilize a ball or Acme screw driven by electric brushless motors via a torque sum gear train. The EMA may have a primary load-activated passive brake (skewed roller) or an electric fail-safe electromechanical brake. The position of the flight control surface is determined by either linear or rotary variable differential transformers (LVDT, RVDT).

In case of a primary load path failure, the primary load path is locked in place and the load is transferred to the secondary load path. Parker’s EMAs use the latest technology, materials, and coatings for failsafe and reliable performance over an aircraft’s entire service life. Our proven design tools and engineering teams optimize the packaging for envelope and weight.

APPLICATIONS:
This product and technology is used to maintain the primary and secondary control surfaces on a variety of commercial airplanes, such as business and regional jets, commercial transports, military fighters, unmanned vehicles, and missile applications.

FEATURES AND ATTRIBUTES:
• High-fault tolerance design with superior reliability.
• High-temperature materials for the actuator and control electronics that allow operation without external cooling.
• Parker-designed skewed roller no-back brakes are proven in multiple EMA applications and provide consistent friction coefficient, plus long life and low wear.
• Brushless motors are a proven Parker motor design. The compact integrated package uses a highly reliable resolver for commutation, with reduced cost and weight.
• Gearbox compact robust design using optimized-modified gearing with specialized heat-treatment processes that reduce weight and increase reliability.
• Electronic primary load-path failure detection with anti-backlash keys (upper and lower) provides immediate failure detection with controlled low backlash to meet flutter requirements.
• Electronic motor control unit provides digitization of sensor data, independent monitoring of electronics, and built-in-test and system health monitoring.
• Dual-channel brake where each channel provides full functionality in a proven, lightweight design.
• Dual-channel position sensor units are proven LVDT and RVDT designs, robust RVDT-to-ball-screw interfaces, and provide feedback for stabilizer surface.

OPTIONAL FEATURES:
Included in this description are flight control actuators, flap actuators, and trim actuators. Actuator output types include Acme screw, ballscrew, compound planetary, rotary, rotary spur, and worm-to-ballscrew.
